Thank you for committing to be an oyster grower for the 2013-2014 season. The time has come to deliver your cages and oyster spat-on-shell. The delivery is scheduled for Thursday, October 3rd. Please mark your calendars and Kelsey Harned will be in touch with you regarding an approximate time for your delivery. While it is preferable that you are home for the delivery, it is not absolutely necessary.
Our goal each year is to double the number of growers we have. Last year we had 33 growers and this year the number has jumped to 78 growers! Thanks to all of you wonderful participants for being a part of our oyster restoration efforts! Due to the large number of growers and cages this year, we are soliciting volunteers for the delivery day. If you have a truck and would be willing to help deliver some cages, we would be most appreciative! We could also use volunteers for distributing the oyster spat-on-shell into the oyster cages, cutting open bags of oysters, and accompanying drivers to actually deliver. You can sign up for any or all of the activities listed–we would be grateful for any amount of time that you could volunteer. Last year we started at 8:00 a.m. and we were finished putting oysters into the cages and loading up the trucks for delivery by 9:30 a.m. There is only a 3 hour time frame in which the oyster spat-on-shell can be out of the water, so we aim to be quick and expedient during this process (translation: we will not keep you there all day, but would be grateful if you could donate a couple of hours of your time for this important event). Food and refreshments will be onsite for all volunteers.
If you are interested in volunteering, please call Kelsey at 410-822-9143, email at info@oystersforthebay.com, or sign up online here. We thank you in advance!
We are excited for another year of fruitful oyster gardens and appreciate your time and dedication to help heal the Bay-one oyster at a time!
Sincerely,
Scott W. Eglseder, Founder
The Chesapeake Bay “Advance & Protect” Oyster Reef Recovery Initiative
P.S. As a reminder, we send out a monthly newsletter to our growers that reminds them of upcoming events as well as tips on oyster gardening and other oyster related information. If you have not done so already, please check your spam folder to make sure you are receiving these communications. Thank you!
